PostSubject: Scientist cracks mobile phone privacy code   Sun Jan 10, 2010 3:22 am

A German computer scientist says he has cracked and published details of the code which keeps most mobile phone conversations private.
Karsten Nohl said he and other experts spent the past five months working out the code used to encrypt calls that use GSM technology.

"Just using your normal gaming computer it will take you a few minutes to decrypt a call," he said"It's clearly illegal to do so. It's not illegal to say that this is already happening.
"What we're trying to do is make information accessible to a much larger audience, perhaps to many more of the victims of such attacks that are already going on everyday."

The GSM association which devised the code says the research is a long way from a practical attack on the technology, and that work is already underway on upgrading security.
